It was the first one I bought, just a few months ago. Bought it used, off facebook. Guy wanted $10 for it but didn't have change for $20. I still feel a bit guilty at how much fun I keep having with it. Sure did get a bargain.

cheers fellas, I love the speed the kingis have when they realise they've been pricked and light the afterburners. This Alvey, with one handle broken off does tend to wobble a wee bit at those times - might glue something there to balance it out again, but it's fun as is. Had a good scrap with a shark this morning before it bit me off. Took me a wee while to confirm it wasn't a big kingi and then get over the top of it to give it a good shot at biting itself off, which it did, after about 15 minutes. Was trying to catch another kingi before the wind kicked in so didn't want to spend much time on the shark (there was a fishing contest on and they don't count sharks). I'm actually really liking being able to palm a reel. there's far more instant control of drag pressures this way. when the fish is going to nod or take a small run i can instantly drop the pressure to avoid breaking the line and then instantly get the pressure back when safe to do so. It's actually easier and faster than pushing a lever or winding a drag knob/star.
Oh, and in case your good selves were wondering, there have been some interesting developments on the 50C drag project. Just a few more options to try and compare and I'll do a write-up. also just have to wait a wee while longer for the new bunnings store to open here - the carpark after hours is a good, long stretch to test drags under big and long loads, for a final comparison before settling on which way I'm going with that drag stack. Reasonably happy with it so far.

Good fight was had with the Shark, i also like the instant control an Alvey gives, then let line go & back on again. Glad to hear from you & big car parks are good for running line out also.
