hey guys, I was just wondering what would be the quickest, easiest and most affordable set-up to get live bait for pier fishing, I don't go to the salt regularly but would like to have a means of collecting bait. I am thinking of something that could keep some mullet alive for a fishing session.
what are some tips for collecting and finding mullet/ prawns etc do I need a bait pump for yabbies or could I just bring a small shovel to dig them out? would a bucket and air pump be enough to keep the bait alive? what should I look for when gathering bait?
I know you cant legally use cast nets in VIC so what are some other means of getting bait fish? i tried a sabiki rig on my most recent trip and just left it hanging over the side of the pier for around 15 minutes and didn't catch anything, so was I doing something wrong or where their just no bait fish around, the sabiki rig has size 8 hooks on them.
is their some kind of fish trap I could chuck out? i was out at night and I saw some gar fish and tried to get them with the sabiki but I didn't get any.
what time of day is best for bait collection? i have heard of people catching the gar fish on a float rig, how would I set it up? what other live baits are there that I might not know of?
could I go to Bunnings and just buy a bucket with a lid and then have a pump on that?
thanks, fisho999

When I did pier fishing in the past, I ever used to dead prawns. But near I could buy live prawns too, a very good bait for snooks (except when the puffers are in the area, so is just lost money).
Not every bait fish like sabiki. In my area, it is just lost time to use. A rig with four very small hooks and small prawn pieces normally are the better option.

Q.1 - what are some tips for collecting and finding mullet/ prawns etc A. - For Mullet some bread crumbs for berley with a spoon full of tuna oil mixed in it, then throw out to attract the Mullet a paternoster rig or quill float rig with spilt shots for weight & size 10-12 long shank hooks, peeled prawns the size of a pea are good bait for Mullet & Garfish. Q. 2 - do I need a bait pump for yabbies or could I just bring a small shovel to dig them out? A. - Yes you need a bait pump, you can't use a shovel its illegal, an Alvey bait pump is best, look for tiny holes for sand worms at low tide & pump there, or larger holes for Bass Yabbies that have a slight mound around the hole. Get a bait sieve also & place a pool noodle around it with cable ties to make it float, so you can pump your discharge from the bait pump into it. Q. 3 - would a bucket and air pump be enough to keep the bait alive? A. - An Alvey bait bucket is nice, but expensive, any bucket wit ha lid will do the job, drill a hole in the lid & place air tube through it. Q. 4 - is their some kind of fish trap I could chuck out? A. - BCF should sell fold up net type bait traps, place some fish or pilchards in it, with some berley & throw it in the water & check on it after some time & see how you go. Q5. - could I go to Bunnings and just buy a bucket with a lid and then have a pump on that. A.- Yes mate why not, it will save you money & be just fine. Hope this answers some of your question, you did ask a lot of ? so i did my best for you ok FH
